McManus says his "goal is to destroy Christianity as a world religion and be a recatalyst for the movement of Jesus Christ."

“Some people are upset with me because it sounds like I’m anti-Christian. I think they might be right.” Erwin McManus, from The Barbarian Way

“Those who study science have told us that a butterfly fluttering its wings in South America could, in some sense, be the primary cause of an avalanche in Antarctica. This level of complexity strikes us as new and innovative, and yet the Scriptures have advocated this kind of interconnection for thousands of years....”According to Scripture, everything is connected, and every action has at least some effect on the whole. In the same way the church is part of the whole....” (Erwin McManus, An Unstoppable Force (Group Publishing, 2001), p. 15.)

Erwin McManus – visionary pastor of Mosaic, filmmaker, and best-selling author Leonard Sweet – futurist writer who leads the church in encountering the next generation of ministry.

McManus asks, "Can pastors and church leaders be real friends?...yes, we risk growing close."

Maybe this should be asked of his many past leaders...

"In this community, everyone has a voice - and an opinion! We have the freedom to disagree. We fight - almost always fairly."

"Friendship is a vital part of New Testament ministry and leadership. In fact, I am convinced that we have been unwittingly shooting ourselves in the heart."

"It may require a pastor to fire someone he loves. I’ve had to do that."

Session 4: The Mosaic Story - Erwin McManus

Erwin shared alot about his early mistakes in leading what was known as the "Church on Brady" at the time - now called Mosaic.

"If you're trying to be relevant, you are already behind. We are agents of change creating the future that God is imagining."

Rather than being relevant, we must focus on the "primary" aspects of life and ministry. A creative person can work wonders with primary colors. We can work wonders with the primary things - the essence of what it means to follow Jesus.

RM: You've said in the past that "Scripture is God through the improvisation of people’s lives."

EM: Well, I build my life not on the Word of God, but the voice of God. The Scriptures are to me the instrument that God has placed in history for me to learn the voice of God. I treasure the Scriptures.

FM: "How has postmodernism affected the church?"

EM:"...Only the viable church of Jesus Christ will survive, the inauthentic need not apply. I want to live in the world that if the church is not the revolution that Jesus died to establish 2000 years ago it ceases to exist. I want to live in a world where the church has no more crutches, or buffers to guard her from injury. I want a church where a culture no longer protects her..."

Maybe he should listen to his own words...

"The greatest threat to the movement of Jesus Christ is Christianity." - Erwin Raphael McManus

Anonymous said...

FM: What have you done to learn about postmodernism?

EM: “When your grandfather teaches you reincarnation and your grandmother teaches you that Jesus is Lord, you aren't taught postmodernism, you are postmodernism.”

http://www.freshministry.org/postmodern/erwin.html

Anonymous said...

FM: What advice would you give churches that want to minister in the postmodern age?

EM: “The most revolutionary thing you can do is call people to pray. Pray for the emerging church and young pastors and the churches in the future that make you uncomfortable.”

“When we focus on church structure, we kill the movement, we need more disorganization, more chaos.”

Erwin likened many churches today to, "...cemeteries - very organized but dead."

Often spiritual leadership is calling God's people to relinquish the past and move into what God's already doing!

When I moved to L.A. in 1992, I discovered that a journey of 20 years is as treacherous as a journey of 200. While we weren't trapped in the traditional era of hymns and robes, we'd settled into a 1970s groove. The church had been a forerunner in so many areas and was known for its innovation. Yet the journey from The Church On Brady to our future as Mosaic was a difficult one. The best way to describe it is that we traveled at the speed of sound to get to the present (the speed of light would have killed us!).

"Peppermint Filled Pinatas is Saving Private Ryan meets Nacho Libre! Eric calls us to a heroic mission and at the same time exposes our flawed humanity. He tackles one of the most critical and complex issues of our time and brings it down to earth and keeps us grounded in reality. It's quite a gift to force us to face such uncomfortable and serious issues and at the same time keep us laughing. Somebody needed to write this book; I am grateful Eric did. We will all be better for it.Thank you Eric for awakening in us a love that knows no boundaries."

In his book Soul Cravings, McManus writes that he was invited to speak to a group of Muslims: "I was left with nowhere to go but to talk more specifically and personally about Jesus. I had been describing to them my own sense of disappointment with and even disdain of the religion of Christianity." (source: Soul Cravings, entry 11)

In Soul Cravings, McManus writes, "Jesus once said that the kingdom of God is within us. Yet most of us dont even bother to explore the possibility that this might be true. It seems that what he is implying is that we have a better chance of finding God in the universe within us than in the one that surrounds us. (Soul Cravings, introduction)

McManus writes about religion/Christianity: "Religion, after all, has become one of history's most powerful tools for controlling people. If you were thinking of a strategy to keep people in line, religion would have to be at the top of the list. In this, Christianity has become no different." (Source: Soul Cravings, entry 22)

The Barbarian Way [his book] was, in some sense, trying to create a volatile fuel to get people to step out and act. It's pretty hard to get a whole group of people moving together as individuals who are stepping into a more mystical, faith-oriented, dynamic kind of experience with Christ. So, I think Barbarian Way was my attempt to say, "Look, underneath what looks like invention, innovation and creativity is really a core mysticism that hears from God, and what is fueling this is something really ancient." Erwin McManus, Interview with Relevant Magazine (emphasis added

There is enough proof of God already inside of people... we don't have to prove that to them. "My goal is to dig into the universe that is inside of you and show you the fingerprints of God that are already there." This is the subject of Erwin's latest book, "Soul Cravings."

“My job isn’t to feed the Christians, so they can feed the sheep,” he said. “My job is to make them hungry so they can feed themselves. The church isn’t here for us. We are the church and we’re here for the world.”

Erwin Said:
Starting Mosaic was not easy, McManus said, and many times he wanted to quit. But he always found the people who brought him the most problems were those who never brought a lost person to church.

What Jesus is saying is that you are a portal, an intersection of the kingdoms. And if you want to begin to find the evidence that you are more than just flesh and blood, begin to look inside of your soul.

Frankly, when I did a talk on Hell this week and why Hell was God's most loving act, the nightclub was just packed this week because of word-of-mouth. People were going, "What's he gonna talk about?" What we're doing now is people are e-mailing us questions around the world and I am reading their questions and saying, "This is the subject today" because I got 20 questions on "Is it okay to be gay?" And I just tell them, "Look, I'm not telling you that I'm gonna give you the best answer. I'm not even telling you that my answer is adequate. But I am gonna engage you in a conversation you will want to continue."
